Change

I stand on the balcony

Welcoming the autumnal breeze

Considering the view across the paddock and beyond

The long summer grass is changing colour

And a kookaburra is raising a song

Lyrical and joking

I meander across the lawn

Through the long afternoon shadows

Pondering the moment and the brevity of time

A season past, a season coming

I’m wary of uninvited change

Normality has no status quo

As the evening approaches

There is dew, cold and wet underfoot

I wish to escape from it

From the unknowing

And I wonder, will I ever know?

Where will I go, who will I meet, what will I do?

I find comfort in anticipation

I snuggle into a warm bed late at night

The cool summer sheets stowed for now

A welcomed change

For the past cannot be contained

And nor should it

For to dream of a new day sublime

Requires the heart for any fate

And faith in the changing tide
